I Am A Camera

It’s rare to see photographer William Yang without a camera in hand. Over the past couple of years it’s been a great pleasure to work with William on our story telling show Stories East & West, for Performance 4a, developing other people’s stories into a moving and compelling theatrical piece. So I enjoyed William’s latest show I Am A Camera in which he turns the lens on his own life, accompanied by live performances of music composed by Elena Kats-Chernin. The show was part of Sydney Festival 2012 and played at Parramatta Riverside 13-15 Jan and the Seymour Centre 17-22 Jan.

I delivered the keynote address to the inaugural Asian Australian Film Forum in Melbourne on 12-13 November, 2011. It was a wonderful gathering of filmmakers, actors, and academics for a weekend of stimulating discussions and screenings, including Corrie Chen’s Wonder Boy, Pearl Tan’s Baby Cakes, Min Tran’s trailer for his horror flick Roses are Dead and Khoa Do’s exceptional feature film Motherfish. Stories East & West cast with William Yang & Annette Shun Wah

COOLie was a two-week season of Asian Australian performance that I produced at Belvoir St Theatre in Feb 2011 for Performance 4a as part of Chinese New Year Festival. We also performed some shows at Riverside Theatres. The season included storytelling shows Stories East & West – which I co-directed with William Yang – and Meeting at Moree featuring William with Indigenous elder Noeline Briggs-Smith; and a truly unusual and uplifting variety show called About Face with comedians Oliver Phommavanh and Jennifer Wong; Paul Cordeiro; Suara Indonesia Dance; singer Lena Cruz and rock legend Les Gock. Directed by Lisa Freshwater, it was a hoot!
