What’s Australia’s place in the Asian century? You could do worse than to refer to Australians of Asian background. But the cultural landscape has a yawning gap as far as investigations of contemporary Asian Australian experiences is concerned. My main gig this year is to run Performance 4a, an organisation with the twin aims of producing performance that explores Asian Australian themes, and supporting the professional development of Australian artists of Asian background working in the performance area. A project I’m really excited about is The Serpent’s Table, which combines storytelling, performance, theatrical installation and FOOD! The exceptional creative team behind the project is pictured here. Griffin Theatre Company is our creative partner in the project, and we hope to have it ready for public consumption in January 2014.

One of the most magical musical experiences I’ve ever had was the Pakistani Qawwali singer, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan performing in Adelaide’s Botanic Park in 1992. After a scorching 40+ degree day, we chilled out in thecool of the night, and the music was as refreshing and rejuvenating as water from a mountain stream. This was my first experience of a WOMAD event. On the same bill was a young but exciting performer from Senegal, Youssou N’Dour, and a host of other revelatory bands from around the world. March 9-12, 2012 sees the twentieth anniversary of WOMADelaide, now a fixture on the festival calendar, and I’m thrilled nowadays to be hosting Stage One. It’s grown into a huge event, about 80,000 attendances over 4 days, but you can still find those quiet intimate moments at some of the smaller stages (there are 7 to choose from). I’ve introduced a number of friends to the WOMADelaide experience over the years, and it never fails to blow them away. I got to interview the great Nusrat that year – via an interpreter – and again on a subsequent visit in 1995. The great Ugandan exiled singer/songwriter Geoffrey Oryema (pictured) came that year.

Youssou N’Dour gave a mighty show for the 10th anniversary and was due to return this year, but decided instead to run for President in Senegal! But the line-up is a very strong one, as befits a 20th birthday show. I’ll be up there on Stage One. Can’t wait!

I Am A Camera

It’s rare to see photographer William Yang without a camera in hand. Over the past couple of years it’s been a great pleasure to work with William on our story telling show Stories East & West, for Performance 4a, developing other people’s stories into a moving and compelling theatrical piece. So I enjoyed William’s latest show I Am A Camera in which he turns the lens on his own life, accompanied by live performances of music composed by Elena Kats-Chernin. The show was part of Sydney Festival 2012 and played at Parramatta Riverside 13-15 Jan and the Seymour Centre 17-22 Jan.

John Blades was a performance artist, broadcaster, structural engineer and dear friend. He passed away on 25 Nov 2011. Despite suffering a debilitating case of MS, that left him with no movement below the neck, John refused to be defined by his illness. With a fierce determination he lived life to the full, performing and recording with his experimental group, The Loop Orchestra, pursuing his eclectic and rather eccentric interests in true crime, experimental sound, Outsider Art and what he termed “extreme human expression”, and making his fortnightly radio show Background Noise for 2MBS FM. Back in 1990 I interviewed John and colleague Peter Doyle about The Loop Orchestra. In 2010, John received one of his highest accolades, winning the Walkley Award for Social Equity Journalism for the radio documentary The too hard basket, a candid and insightful exploration of sex and disability. The documentary also won the The Human Rights Award and Best Documentary from the Asian Broadcasting Union. One of his interviewees was sex worker Rachel Wotton the subject of a video documentary Scarlet Road: A Sex Worker’s Journey. John features briefly in the program. He died two weeks shy of his 52nd birthday, with so much more to do.

First there was Oumou Sangare. Then came Rokia Traore. Now the latest female singing sensation from the Wassoulou region of Mali in West Africa is Fatoumata Diawara. She toured in January and gave a stunning performance in the Spiegeltent at Sydney Festival. And she’s on my Global Beat radio program on Qantas inflight. I delivered the keynote address to the inaugural Asian Australian Film Forum in Melbourne on 12-13 November, 2011. It was a wonderful gathering of filmmakers, actors, and academics for a weekend of stimulating discussions and screenings, including Corrie Chen’s Wonder Boy, Pearl Tan’s Baby Cakes, Min Tran’s trailer for his horror flick Roses are Dead and Khoa Do’s exceptional feature film Motherfish. What do you know about “astronauts’ wives”, Dragon Balls and rank badges? China Heart is a smartphone app and associated website which I wrote and directed. It uses video dramatisations, oral histories, historical re-enactments, archival photos, text and locative gaming to take the user on a fascinating journey around Sydney’s Chinatown to learn about marriage and family in the Australian Chinese community. You can still download the app for free from the iTunes store, or browse the China Heart website.
